"Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:3-4, ESV)
Worry is born when the desires of our hearts are in danger of going unfulfilled. When we think that we might not get what we want, worry steps in, directing all our energy toward fixing an imagined future where we believe that we might miss out on something important. It fixates our thoughts on how terrible it would be to live through our imagined nightmare, fueling our anxiety. When we worry about how terrible it will be if our desires aren’t met, we exhaust ourselves trying to keep that future from coming true. This anxious fixation robs us of peace and joy, making it difficult, if not impossible, to trust in God's sovereignty, provision, and power tomorrow.
But the psalmist gives us an effortless but effective answer to the problem of anxiety: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Delighting in the Lord is more than just being happy about who He is. It’s about embracing the present moment with joy, knowing He is present in it and working His will through it. Delighting is about focusing on His presence and faithfulness instead of your imagined future. When you delight in the Lord, you shift your focus from your problems and fears to His greatness and loving care.
