Seeing God In Your Life #1 - Seeing The Things He's Given You
Anybody ever been in that place where you feel like nothing's going your way? When it feels like your life is hard, or you're wishing you had something someone else had? Ever felt jealous? Of course. At some point in your life, I'm sure that's how you felt. But here's an activity I found that can really help put things into perspective.
Start in your room. Get a piece of paper - a big one - and start making a list of every single thing you own. Yes, EVERYTHING. Make sure you write down the number of things, too. For example:
~bed
~dresser
~15 pairs of earrings
~nightstand
~lamp
~5 books
etc.
Now. Go into your bathroom, your kitchen, the rest of your house. Try making a list of all the things you have. Don't forget your house itself, the roof over your head, nice carpet, chairs, etc.! Overwhelmed? Try to get as many things as you can. Add them up. For example, if the list above was real and that was all, the total would be 24. You add the total number of each item.
So, I assume your eyes are open? Your list probably has a ton of stuff on it, right? Make a list of all of the essentials, all of the things you absolutely need to live. No, you do not need a toothbrush or hairbrush to stay alive. I'm talking about the essentials: food, water, shelter...the list isn't very long.
Take the number of essentials and subtract it from the number of things you have overall. Isn't it amazing how many extra things God gives you? The things is, what if you think, "Yes, he's given me a lot, but he's given everyone else just as much!"
FALSE.
Don't forget about the people who's homes where destroyed in hurricanes. The people who never had much to begin with.
Imagine living here, in Haiti. You have the bare minimum. Imagine if your list was actually just as short as your list of the essentials. Look where you're sitting right now, reading this. You have to at least have some kind of electronic to be doing so.
Aren't you lucky?
