Music is a major part of my life. I've always grown up with my parents telling me what I should and shouldn't listen to, but now i'm beginning to explore these areas out on my own. I love country music. it's just a part of my life in the south and everyone at the stables I work for listens to it. I also listen to rock music because of my friends at school. My parents are strictly gospel only....they won't even listen to contemporary. So is the music I listen to ok?

Comment by Jordan Carmichael on September 9, 2012 at 1:24pm This is one of those situations where everyone has their own opinion on, so everyone is going to tell you something different—everyone will tell you what is right and what is wrong. Personally, I believe that the rhythm or beat or music to a song really isn't all the important. The words are what really matters. You could take one of your parents favorite gospel songs and stick horrible, ungodly lyrics to it. That song would no longer be honoring to God.
We all have different likes and dislikes when it comes to music. Like you I enjoy rock, but unlike you I can't stand country. So if I wanted to be singing a praise song to God, I probably wouldn't sing something country, because personally it is just not my style of music, and it would be hard to enjoy praising God in that.
I think most of the time parents, or people from older generations might not like the music we listen to, because the popular music in that genre does not have good, wholesome lyrics, so they just stereotype all music in that category in that music to bad.
Now, also who is to say that a certain kind of music is bad. God never says don't listen to this style of music, listen to this. Make sure that the music you are listening to you has good lyrics. Ones that are uplifting to God, that bring you closer to him, that help you grow with God. You don't want to be listening to music that is focusing on bad things in this world. That will only bring you down.
And lastly, your parents might believe that gospel is the only good kind of music. Honor that. God does tell us to obey our parents. But if you are really questioning what they believe, ask them why. Use some of the points that I have said maybe when you are talking to them. But remember to obey your parents. Do not be disrespectful when you talk to them. Don't get angry or fresh with them
Music is so important to God, and he wants to hear us sing. I think we all need to find that special music that draws us closer to God. Hopefully I helped, and sorry for such a long response; I tend to do that a lot.
